How to Get an Indonesian KITAS Visa: Complete Guide for Dubai Expats

Everything you need to know about Indonesia’s KITAS temporary stay permit — types, requirements, costs, and the application process explained.

Understanding the Indonesian KITAS Visa

The KITAS (Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas) is Indonesia’s temporary stay permit, equivalent to a residence visa. For Dubai expats planning to live in Bali long-term, the KITAS is the most important document you will obtain. It allows you to stay in Indonesia for one to two years with renewal options, open a local bank account, purchase a vehicle, enrol children in school, and access services that require resident status.

Coming from Dubai where residence visas are employer-sponsored and tightly controlled, the Indonesian system offers more flexibility but requires understanding of different visa categories and their specific requirements. Unlike Dubai where your company handles everything, Indonesian visa processes require more personal involvement — or the support of a qualified visa agent.

After Dubai specialises in navigating this process for Gulf expats. We handle the complete application from documentation to approval, eliminating the confusion and frustration that many newcomers experience with Indonesian immigration procedures.

Types of KITAS Visas

Work KITAS (KITAS Kerja) is for foreign nationals employed by an Indonesian company or establishing their own business through a PT PMA. This requires a sponsoring employer, work permit (IMTA), and compliance with Indonesia’s foreign worker regulations. The process takes 4-8 weeks and is valid for one year, renewable annually. This is the most common KITAS type for Dubai professionals transitioning to Bali-based employment.

Investor KITAS allows foreign nationals who invest in an Indonesian business to obtain residency. Minimum investment thresholds apply, and the visa is tied to your business entity. This suits Dubai entrepreneurs establishing PT PMA companies in Bali. The investor KITAS provides maximum flexibility for running your business and living in Indonesia.

Retirement KITAS is available for foreign nationals over 55 years of age who can demonstrate sufficient pension income or savings to support themselves. Requirements include proof of monthly income of at least $1,500, health insurance coverage, and accommodation in Indonesia. This is popular with early retirees leaving Dubai who have built sufficient passive income.

Spouse/Family KITAS allows foreign nationals married to Indonesian citizens to obtain residency. This requires marriage certificate verification and sponsor documentation. Dependent KITAS covers children of KITAS holders.

Digital Nomad Visa (E33G) is Indonesia’s newest visa category, specifically designed for remote workers earning income from overseas. Valid for up to five years with annual renewals, it allows you to live in Indonesia while working for foreign companies or clients. Crucially, foreign-sourced income earned under this visa is exempt from Indonesian income tax — making it exceptionally attractive for Dubai expats who work remotely.

The KITAS Application Process

The KITAS application process involves several steps that differ from Dubai’s streamlined visa system. First, you apply for a VITAS (Visa Tinggal Terbatas) — the entry visa that converts to KITAS upon arrival. This requires a sponsor in Indonesia (employer, agent, or spouse), completed application forms, passport with minimum 18 months validity, passport photos, and supporting documents specific to your KITAS category.

Upon arrival in Indonesia with your VITAS, you attend the local immigration office for biometrics, photograph, and KITAS card issuance. You must also register at the local police station (STM) and obtain a SKTT (temporary resident registration) from the local government office. The complete process from application to KITAS card in hand typically takes 4-8 weeks when handled by an experienced agent.

KITAS holders must obtain a re-entry permit before leaving Indonesia, or their KITAS becomes void. Multiple re-entry permits (MERP) are available for frequent travellers. Annual renewal requires submission 30 days before expiry. After five consecutive years on KITAS, you may be eligible for KITAP — a permanent stay permit valid for five years.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a KITAS visa cost?

KITAS costs vary by type. A work KITAS typically costs $1,500-$3,000 including agent fees, government charges, and work permit. Retirement KITAS costs $1,000-$2,000. Investor KITAS ranges from $2,000-$4,000. The Digital Nomad Visa costs approximately $500-$1,000 for the initial application. Annual renewals cost 40-60% of the initial application. These costs are significantly lower than Dubai’s visa and Emirates ID fees.

Can I work freelance on a KITAS?

The Digital Nomad Visa is specifically designed for freelancers and remote workers earning foreign income. A standard work KITAS requires employment by a specific Indonesian company. If you operate as a freelancer serving international clients, the Digital Nomad Visa provides the legal framework to live and work in Bali without establishing an Indonesian business entity.

What happens if my KITAS expires?

An expired KITAS results in overstay penalties of IDR 1,000,000 (approximately $65) per day, up to a maximum of 60 days. After 60 days of overstay, deportation and a re-entry ban may apply. It is critical to track your KITAS expiry date and begin renewal 30 days before expiration. After Dubai manages renewal tracking and processing for all our relocation clients.

Does After Dubai handle the complete KITAS process?

Yes. After Dubai manages the entire KITAS process from initial consultation and document preparation through to KITAS card issuance. We determine the optimal visa category for your situation, prepare all documentation, liaise with immigration authorities, accompany you to appointments, and manage annual renewals. Our service eliminates the bureaucratic complexity that frustrates many new arrivals.

How long does the complete KITAS application process take?

The KITAS application timeline varies by category but typically spans four to eight weeks from initial document submission to visa stamp in your passport. The process begins with your Indonesian sponsor submitting a telex approval request to the Directorate General of Immigration, which takes two to three weeks for approval. Once approved, you have sixty days to collect your visa at an Indonesian embassy or consulate abroad. Our immigration team manages the entire process ensuring no deadlines are missed.

What documents do you need for a KITAS application?

The KITAS application requires specific documentation that must be prepared carefully to avoid delays. Essential documents include your valid passport with minimum 18 months remaining validity, passport-sized photographs on red background, a curriculum vitae, educational certificates and professional qualifications, a police clearance certificate from your country of origin or last residence (including UAE for Dubai expats), health certificate from an approved medical facility, and your sponsor letter from your Indonesian employer or sponsoring company. All foreign documents must be legalized or apostilled. Our documentation specialists prepare your complete application package, ensuring every document meets Indonesian immigration standards before submission.
